Dr. Thomas Freeman is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and advanced shoulder and knee care. He treats both adult and pediatric patients, helping individuals recover from injuries, relieve pain, and return to the activities that matter most to them. Whether caring for a young athlete after a first injury, helping a weekend warrior get back to running, or restoring mobility for someone whose shoulder pain has limited daily life, Dr. Freeman is committed to providing thoughtful, individualized care centered around each patient’s goals.
After graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Freeman earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center before pursuing an additional year of specialized fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the University of Michigan.
While at the University of Michigan, Dr. Freeman cared for athletes competing at the highest collegiate level as a team physician for the University of Michigan Football Team, Eastern Michigan University Football Team, and numerous other University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan athletic programs. Working alongside elite athletes strengthened his expertise in diagnosing and treating complex orthopedic injuries while reinforcing the importance of individualized treatment plans and safe return-to-play decisions.
Dr. Freeman has extensive experience treating a wide variety of shoulder and knee conditions, including rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability and dislocations, ACL injuries, complex multi-ligament knee injuries, and arthritis requiring shoulder replacement. He specializes in arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery, anatomic total shoulder replacement, reverse total shoulder replacement, and advanced sports medicine procedures. He believes the best treatment plan is one that fits the individual, whether that involves surgery, rehabilitation, or conservative care.
What drives Dr. Freeman most is helping people regain the ability to do the things they love. He understands that an orthopedic injury often affects much more than a single joint. It can interrupt careers, hobbies, family activities, and everyday life. His goal is to partner with each patient, providing clear communication, evidence-based treatment, and compassionate care from the first visit through recovery.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Freeman enjoys living the same active lifestyle he encourages in his patients. A dedicated endurance athlete, he has completed three marathons, nine half marathons, and two sprint triathlons. He has also climbed both Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Rainier, experiences that reinforced the value of preparation, perseverance, and resilience. His passion for fitness and outdoor adventure gives him a firsthand appreciation for the determination required to recover from an injury and return to an active life.
When he is not caring for patients, Dr. Freeman enjoys spending time with his wife, Sydnie, and their two children. Together they enjoy biking, exploring the outdoors, and creating new adventures as a family. He is also an avid reader with interests spanning many genres and loves traveling throughout the United States, especially visiting America’s national parks. These experiences continue to inspire his appreciation for lifelong health, movement, and the outdoors.
